I Love Mr Sushi Takeaway. Mr. Sushi comes in middling for me. I'd give it a 7.0/10. The sushi is good, restaurant-quality stuff that won't disappoint, but it's not going to blow your mind either. With University City's insane number of better Asian options just a few extra minutes down the road, I Love Mr Sushi really only wins for being close by.
If you live within spitting distance and need sushi right now, this is your spot. For everyone else, you're better off driving to Top Sushi or Sado, where the quality justifies the price tag. At $16 a roll, you're not getting any sort of deal here.
Service has been perfectly fine on my visits. The place has never been packed. Parking is easy in a dedicated lot right out front.
I Love Mr Sushi Experience Summary
I Love Mr Sushi is that neighborhood spot you try once, maybe twice, and then quietly forget exists.
In the six years I've lived in the area, my wife and I have been there a total of two, maybe three times. Once for date night because we wanted sushi, and it was the closest option. The other time was quite literally for this review. We got takeout this round.
The first time we actually ate there.
Here's the thing about I Love Mr Sushi. It's good. Just not great.
When you're sitting in University City, you've got this ridiculous collection of fantastic Asian restaurants within a five-minute drive. In my opinion, I Love Mr Sushi doesn't quite stack up against the competition. For $16 a roll, I'd much rather make the slightly longer drive to Top Sushi where the quality is noticeably better. Or hit up Sō where the rolls are essentially the same price but the fish tastes fresher and the combinations are more creative.
The big selling point here is convenience. Pure and simple.
It's the only sushi place within about an eight to ten-minute drive of my house. So if you want to save those eight minutes each direction and you're craving sushi, this is the spot. The math is pretty straightforward.
The place has never been packed when I've walked in. The server has been fine both times. Nothing to complain about on the service front. It's really just that the sushi itself doesn't make my taste buds particularly happy compared to what else is out there.
This is restaurant-quality sushi. You're not going to get food poisoning. It's going to taste pretty good. But it's not going to be the best sushi you've ever had.
So I Love Mr Sushi is the kind of place I'll go to once every couple of years when I'm in a pinch and can't be bothered to drive an extra ten minutes. That's about it.
The Food At I Love Mr Sushi
On this visit, I went with the kamikaze roll. It was the special of the day.
Basically, a California roll with fried shrimp and then tuna on top. Add green onions, sauce, and ginger to have a good time. Everything I typically like about a roll was there.
It had a nice little kick to it. Good, but not great. The sauce they used wasn't my favorite, honestly, but the ginger helped mellow it out. All in all, a very solid roll without being memorable.
My wife ordered her standard go-to, the rainbow roll. She enjoyed it well enough. I snagged a piece to try.
I can't eat salmon, so I don't usually order rainbow rolls myself, but I'm always a fan of good tuna. This one was fine.
The California roll base underneath had a bit too much mayo for my taste, but nothing terrible.
We grabbed chicken katsu for the kids. Nice and crunchy on the outside, well-cooked in the middle.
Nothing to write home about, though. I liked the katsu at Katsuya in the Loop better.
The prices run relatively high compared to some other spots in the area. You're looking at around $16 per roll.
I Love Mr Sushi Atmosphere and Miscellaneous
The atmosphere is fine. Nothing special, nothing offensive. It's a neighborhood sushi joint through and through.
Service has been adequate on both my visits. Never had to wait long. Never had any issues. The staff gets the job done without any fuss.
Parking At I Love Mr Sushi
Parking is easy. Dedicated lot right out front. Can't beat it.
