Donut Drive Up Takeaway. Donut Drive Up offers solidly above-average donuts. I'd say the star of their small show is the apple fritter and light, fluffy glazed donut. I give them a 7.2 / 10, as I have still not been blown away by donuts better than Schnucks in a while.
The operation can be a bit "janky" as they got my four-donut order wrong, didn't have one in stock at 10:30 am (fine), and are basically a donut stand in a parking lot (which is also fine). That said, your kids will like them if you make a stop after a visit to Brentwood Park, like we did. As you might expect, Donut Drive Up is the brother of Donut Drive In.
Donut Drive Up Experience Summary
Continuing my search for the best donuts in St. Louis in a post-Boogyz Donuts world, we drove up to Donut Drive Up today for the first time.
Not to be confused with Donut Drive In on the other side of town, we were at Brentwood Park, and Donut Drive Up was right nearby. So we stopped for some donuts on the way home from the park.
I was surprisingly impressed. The donuts were solidly above average, around a 7.2 / 10. I've come to learn, I'm not really a "donut guy." In my head, I really like donuts, and then when I eat them, but they're just not as good as I think they're going to be.
At least compared to what I can get at Schnucks as a point of reference.
The whole operation was a little janky. It's like two high school kids in a hut serving donuts. They got the order wrong. They plated them really, really poorly in the bag.
But I imagine that you can only get 18-year-olds to bag some donuts for you at 9 am on a Saturday.
Again, like a 7.2 / 10.
The Food At Donut Drive Up
The apple fritters here were one of the better ones I've had in town. I used to really love Boogyz's apple fritters, which were insanely good.
It's not that quality, but this is a good fritter. It wasn't as big and fluffy as some of the apple fritters I've had, but it had a good flavor, was filled with big chunks of apples, and had a solid, buttery consistency.
I was a fan.
The glazed donut had a nice, melt-in-your-mouth consistency, yet remained light and fluffy. My kids got a chocolate sprinkled donut and a cinnamon twist. I got a bite of those.
Those are both very, very good for what they are. I liked the cinnamon twist more than the chocolate sprinkles.
It was a little bit expensive as far as donuts go. $3.50 for a fritter, and $1.80 for a donut. That's relatively expensive for the area.
It's hard to beat Schnucks $.99 for a donut, which is actually a really good deal around here. I'd say these were at the same level of quality as Schnucks. And I think that Schnucks' donuts are actually surprisingly good.
Donut Drive Up has a very limited menu selection. They were out of old-fashioned donuts by the time we got there at like 10:30 in the morning on a Sunday. It was not crowded then at all, probably more crowded earlier in the morning. They also have coffee and stuff, but I didn't get any coffee. You don't need coffee for donuts, right?
Donut Drive Up Atmosphere And Miscellaneous
It's literally a hut in the middle of a parking lot with a window on one side for a walk-up and one window on the other for a drive-through.
Make sure you go to the right one, or you'll awkwardly end up like me, going to the wrong one. That was easy enough to fix with some backing up.
Each person in front of me took about two to three minutes. So, they get you in and out pretty quickly, but that comes at a cost. They tossed all the donuts in a bag with the chocolate from the long john melting over all the other donuts.
Although the presentation wasn't the best, the quality of the product was quite good.
There's basically no place to sit down, maybe a picnic table, so it's purely a grab-and-go spot.
Parking At Donut Drive Up
Donut Drive Up has a big parking lot attached if you want to go to the window, but the idea here is to drive up and drive out.
