Best Ice Cream In St. Louis According To Me

St. Louis Ice Cream Comparisons

Because I'm only one dad and cannot eat at every ice cream shop in St. Louis, I visit as many highly-rated ice cream shops as possible, following recommendations from friends, family, and long-time residents. I count ice cream, gelato, custard, and frozen yogurt as "Ice Cream" for ranking purposes. I mention what each place serves, so you're not surprised.

I have had ice cream all over St. Louis and spent over $100 to find these picks for you.

Based on my scoring system, an average restaurant scores 3.5 out of 5. I personally think Dairy Queen is very hard to beat for the price and quality, giving it a 4.03 / 5. Anything over 4 is one of the top 10 percent of restaurants I've had.

I base these rankings on a combination of taste and price, emphasizing service and atmosphere less. You can read more details on my restaurant review philosophy. I have every restaurant across categories in rank order based on overall stars.

But remember, I don't make the rules; I just think 'em up and write 'em down.

Best Ice Cream In St. Louis

  1. #1 Best Ice Cream In St. Louis

Clementine's Naughty & Nice Ice Cream

Clementine's Naughty & Nice Ice Cream Takeaway. Naughty = Expensive, Nice = Delicious. Clementine's may cost an arm and a leg for ice cream, but damn is it good. 9.2 / 10 ice cream, it's the real deal. I got an espresso royale with flakes of espresso. My wife had a midnight cherry bite in a waffle cone. At $5.50 for a scoop and $2 for a waffle cone, ice cream for two cost us $16. They have a ton of custom flavors, including chocolate bourbon and champagne. Real deal ice cream experience.

Clementine's is my favorite ice cream in St. Louis.

Standard ice cream service in a single file line with multiple people taking orders. You can taste test any flavor you like, with some people tasting two. They had two people taking orders, so a line will form when eight people come in like us at 9 pm. Parking in a giant dedicated lot at this location in Clayton, they have several locations around St. Louis.

    Serendipity Homemade Ice Cream

Serendipity Takeaway. Serendipity serves up surprisingly scrumptious ice cream. My wife and I didn't expect to be blown away with some of the best ice cream in St. Louis. Creamy and flavorful it delivered a deserved 8.6 / 10.

The ice cream has a unique, pleasant texture, and the value is excellent. The clever "topping" scoop option, which lets you try another flavor for a small charge, is a great touch. While the service was fast and friendly, the one hang-up was the menu. The ice cream has fun, creative names, but they didn't include descriptions of the ingredients.

But even with that small hiccup, Serendipity is one of the better local ice cream places in St. Louis and I highly recommended it for an after-dinner dessert.

  3. #3 Best Ice Cream In St. Louis

    Dairy Queen

Dairy Queen Takeaway. The Comparison Ice Cream. A blizzard comes in at 7.0 / 10 ice cream score for me. Worth getting over Ben & Jerry's. Get a small size over a mini, the marginal oz on the additional $.50 is huge. My wife and kids love the vanilla ice cream with sprinkles in a cone. This location didn't have chocolate ice cream. I'm not sure if that is franchise-wide now. We've never had anything besides ice cream.

Because they have multiple registers inside, you get considerably faster service going inside instead of waiting in the drive-thru. The inside feels kind of dumpy but clean because the ceilings are low, it's poorly lit, cramped, and visually much noisier than McDonald's behind the counter. They packed almost too much seating into the limited space, making it feel cramped.

Pro Tip: Make sure not to park somewhere the drive-thru will box you in. You can end up getting stuck behind someone for a bit.

  4. #4 Best Ice Cream In St. Louis

    Skeeters Frozen Custard

Skeeters Frozen Custard Takeaway. Skate on down to Skeeters for some casual frozen custard. Not the best, not the worst frozen dessert. 7 / 10 ice cream score for me. My $3.25 vanilla custard was pillowy to go with the expected amount of creamy, but not a flavor festival. A giant menu of toppings and mixins means there's a flavor option for everyone. Concretes are the go-to most of the time.

We went on a summer Saturday night with friends after dinner. With a full parking lot, they quickly got through the line of people. You order at one window to pick up at a second window. Got our four custards in under ten minutes. The staff at Skeeters has obviously been doing this for a long time as they move you right along. They do not have indoor seating but have several picnic tables outdoors. They have a dozen or so dedicated spots for parking, or you can park on the street.

  5. #5 Best Ice Cream In St. Louis

Mr Wizard's Frozen Custard and Yogurt

Mr Wizard's Frozen Custard and Yogurt Takeaway. Mr. Wizard's ice cream lacked the magic I'd hoped. 5.0 / 10 ice cream score means I won't be coming back to Hogwarts. The custard lacked flavor and texture. The custard was cold on a hot day but didn't offer much else. $4.03 for a concrete, $3.02 for my kiddie sundae, or $4.12 for a pint makes it affordable for St. Louis. But you get what you pay for.

Service was serviceable. They had a single person taking orders and then a team fulfilling them. They have another window where you can pick up your order. We were second in line. It took maybe five to ten minutes to get the ice cream, so no problem there. They have a dedicated parking lot with a ton of parking off Big Bend.

Oberweis Ice Cream and Dairy Store

Oberweis Takeaway. Mid-west ice-cream chain. 7/10 quality, creamy ice cream. Flavorful coffee. Good-looking chocolate and peanut butter sundae cones. Soft-serve that satisfies. Friendly staff and clean restaurant. Offers ice cream cartons to go, milk, and other assorted goods. My buddy loves the fruit punch. Parking varies by location. While tastes on par with Ben & Jerry's, not sure it's worth the premium. My favorite Ben & Jerry's would be 7/10 taste.

FroYo Frozen Yogurt

FroYo Frozen Yogurt Takeaway. Standard, local frozen yogurt. Standard toppings. Standard extras. Standard taste. Rainbow mochi. No taro. 5/10 frozen dessert. $.66/oz comes out to $4.XX for normal serving. 8yr olds will find a way to spend $6.XX. Clean machines, parlor, and bathrooms. Parking is easy in a shopping mall lot. Not sure it's worth 2x to 4x the price of Ben & Jerry's.
